On August 24, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a speech via video link at the launch ceremony and the first plenary meeting of the Committee for Future Development of China-Republic of Korea (ROK) Relations.

Wang Yi extended warm congratulations on the official launch of the Committee for Future Development of China-ROK Relations. He said that further strengthening China-ROK friendly cooperation conforms to the current situation and people's aspirations, and is in keeping with the fundamental interests of both sides against the backdrop of complex and profound international and regional conditions.

"Loving people and treating neighbors kindly is critical to a country's survival," Wang Yi said, adding China and the ROK are each other's important neighbors and cooperative partners. Today marks the 29th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the ROK. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 29 years ago, China-ROK relations have developed rapidly in an all-round way, which has delivered benefits to the two countries and peoples. In recent years, under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and President Moon Jae-in, exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various fields have further flourished, making positive contributions to regional and world peace and development. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, China and the ROK helped each other through thick and thin. The anti-pandemic cooperation and friendly relations have gone hand in hand, which vividly illustrates the neighborhood friendship of "great distance cannot separate us, we all live in a united world", and the concept of the community with a shared future.

Wang Yi said that 2021 and 2022 mark the China-ROK Year of Cultural Exchanges and 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the ROK. At this important time, with the care and attention of the two heads of state and the strong support of people from all walks of life, the Committee for Future Development of China-ROK Relations came into being. The committee gathers elites from all walks of life in the two countries and has a strong lineup. He hopes that members of the committee will exchange ideas, contribute wisdom, build consensus, conduct in-depth research on how to solidify the foundation of China-ROK relations, promote advantages, strengthen weaknesses, and make up for shortcomings, and propose strategic, forward-looking, high-level, feasible, and effective policy recommendations, so as to help the bilateral relations brave the winds and waves for steady and sustained growth in the next 30 years. He believes that with the joint efforts of both sides, the committee will be able to complete its tasks satisfactorily and deliver a satisfactory response to the two governments and peoples.

ROK Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong said via video link that on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the ROK and China, the official launch of the Committee for Future Development of ROK-China Relations is of great significance. The ROK and China are important close neighbors. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have achieved fruitful results in exchanges and cooperation in various fields. Facing the huge challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ROK-China cooperation in the fight against the pandemic has been fruitful, and economic exchanges have bucked the trend. The ROK and China are actively committed to achieving denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, and will continue to work closely to advance the peace process on the Peninsula and maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia. Next year is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the ROK and China, and the relationship between the two countries will enter into our thirties. The two sides will build on the existing development and promote bilateral relations towards a more mature and healthy direction. The establishment of the Committee for Future Development of ROK-China Relations is an important step for the two sides to discuss and jointly seek the development of bilateral relations in the next 30 years. He expects that the committee will lay a solid foundation for further enriching the ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership and set a new milestone for the development of ROK-China relations in the next 30 years.

The Committee for Future Development of China-ROK Relations is a temporary, and track II institution, which is officially supported by the two countries. It aims to take the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the ROK in 2022 as an opportunity to conduct joint research, plan a blueprint for the development of bilateral relations, and provide advice and suggestions to the two governments.
